![]() ![]() I was full of anxiety about the time commitment involved. It was guilt that brought me to the party and it was guilt that brought me to UCLA. I think that is true in a life narrative, but also in a dramatic narrative with a screenplay. I think there’s a lesson in that, which is if you look for things you just won’t find them. I had sold my first novel to a prominent New York publisher and I had sold the film rights to a major Hollywood studio and I was busy working on the adaptation, so the last thing I was looking for was a job. I had been supporting a family exclusively as a writer doing assignment after assignment for the major studios. But I did go to this party in Malibu as the host had been very supportive of my career.Īs I walked in the door he greeted me and told his friend stood next to him, someone I did not know, who was the head of the program of UCLA that I was the guy he’d been talking about.
